It's rare that as a wine drinker you get to truly taste through a specific producer and truly appreciate their winemaking style and variety.
In our first of many Discovery packs we focus on one of our favourite Natural Wine producers, Lammidia, an Italian natural winery run by two of natural wines most prized winemakers - Davide Gentile & Marco Guilani. Situated in the coastal town of Pescara, Abruzzo, the pair buy grapes from around 5 hectares of vines in the hills above Pescara and two 1⁄2 hectare sites nearer the coast, mainly Montepulciano and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo but they also have a little Pinot Noir, Barbera and Moscato.
We have put together four of their very latest releases to give you an opportunity to discover Lammidia.
1. Lammidia, Panda 2021
Panda is a dry peach-colored rosé wine with a feminine character and an incredibly rich nose. Made of Moscato (one-night skin contact) and Montepulciano (direct pressed) with 6 months in a steel vat. The result is a wine with oodles of character and a freshness and structure that really celebrates the Montepulciano variety.
Producer: Lammidia
Region: Abruzzo, Italy
Grapes: Moscato, Montepulciano
Style: Rosé
ABV: 10.5%
2. Lammidia, 65125 2020
The 65125 ( the postal code of Pescara the town where the winery is based ) is made from 100% Syrah that undertakes a short carbonic maceration followed by aging in steel tanks. An unconventional natural red wine as per the Lammidia way made in a South of France style, fruit-forward at first with well-balanced Syrah spices on the back palate.
Producer: Lammidia
Region: Abruzzo, Italy
Grapes: Syrah
Style: Red
ABV: 12%
3. Lammidia, Zeus Faber 2021
Zeus Faber or John Dory for us Brits, is a wine made from the unique and pretty unknown grape, Faber, a crossing of Chardonnay and Müller-Thurgau. It's all Peaches, apricots, and pineapples with light green tones, candied citrus, and steam-like bitterness on the finish. Grapes are picked by hand, direct pressed and destemmed before spending 12 hours on skins. A wine very true-to-style for Lammidia, and on the more extreme end of Natural winemaking.
Producer: Lammidia
Region: Abruzzo, Italy
Grapes: Faber
Style: Orange
ABV: 12%
4. Lammidia, Flamingo 2020
Lammidia returns with their eagerly anticipated 2020 releases. It's the first time in the UK for Flamingo, a unique blend of over 10 different white and red grape varieties, super fresh and easy to drink. On the nose through to the palate, it's all about crushed berries and pomegranate with a light lingering finish. Organic & Biodynamic.
